alphaville

kyoto-based architecture studio alphaville (kentaro takeguchi, asako yamamoto) has sent us images
of their newest project 'roof on the hill', a private residence in a new development site in takarazuka, japan.
working with the solid soil condition of the plot, the single storey design follows the natural slope of
the terrain by dividing the floor plan in stepped back intervals.

house I by yoshichika takagi

Japanese architecture studio Yoshichika Takagi has completed the House I located in Akita City, Japan. With an undeniable inspirational architecture, the building lies in the middle of an urban area, surrounded by large commercial buildings. As you can see from the pictures, privacy was a problem when designing this structure. The architects had to be careful to keep a balance between the private parts of the residence and the public spaces. The interior of the building was thus created as a balanced and carefully studied space composition, with a semi-enclosed floor plan that protects the privacy of the inhabitants.

modular

In case you’ve been living under some sort of circular rock, modular housing and building practices have flung themselves out of the fringe architectural practices right into the mainstream. You still want a definition? Well they’re homes, pre-made as sections in a warehouse, and shipped to your land to be put together on site. Like big, giant, stylish building blocks, they offer a lot of advantages, and usually look real cool.

studio velocity: montblanc house

Düsseldorf

Home of a couple with a passion for architecture who were keen to make one of Düsseldorf’s rare ruins their own. The reconversion was closely overseen by the administrative authorities, since this old factory in the city centre miraculously avoided damage during the many bombings of World War II. Across from the coachman’s passageway are some garages that stand in front of the entrance court. The court is dotted with screens that flank the entrance and seclude off the “day patio”. The history of the city is reflected in the glass panels, reminding you of the building’s heritage. A facade made entirely of glass stands completely independently of the old structures, showing off their immense scale.

The Club Hotel

The Club Hotel is an odd mix of futurism with the neon lighting, Alice in Wonderland-feeling with the big chess patterns and absurd art, and rococo beauty with marble floors and curvy table legs. But it kind of works, doesn't it?

emeco bench

The Emeco Navy Bench takes the original designed Emeco Chair from the 1940's and elongates the design to the size of a bench. The design was inspired by the way we perceive our environment through the objects around us. Using the concept of anamorphosis, most notably exemplified in The Ambassadors, a painting by Hans Holbein, the design is unaltered when viewed from a single vantage point, but as you move from that point, the design begins to be distorted, taking on a new form of a bench. The polished surface of the bench accentuates the distortion of the design by the reflection that is created on the surface. The bench is made of aluminum with an anodized finish.

Training Dresser for Kids

Great dresser idea to engage kids and also a sweet iconic furniture piece for parents. The dresser is hand crafted and packaged with care in Eastern Washington by the crew Mountain View Cabinetry. The items imprinted on each drawer are enough to create a minimum interaction with any naughty kid. This type of dresser will definitely make them think twice about where to place their pants, socks etc. By designer Peter Bristol. Via Design Don't Panic.

modern farm house

“The site is located in the centre of beautiful small village Mala Lhota in the valley of the hilly countryside in the middle of Czech Republic. Existing rural buildings on the site were in very bad condition and therefore demolished and removed. The main design concept was to create building which would be traditional, modest and friendly to it’s neighbourhood and surrounding village context. The form of the new building complies with traditional Czech rural house.” More information and gorgeous photos of this Family House in Malá Lhota by Jarousek Rochova Architeckti at Architizer.

levitating furniture

Philippe Nigro designed an interesting furniture piece for a Milano based company calledComforty. Found on Mocoloco, this unusual cushioned  floating sofa was suspended by a steel tube exo-skeleton frame for an intriguing visual effect. Resembling a giant spider web, the frame system is both modern looking and appealing, but not so practical in a contemporary home, due to the enormous space it occupies.

montjuic pavilion

In Barcelona, SPAIN, although municipal regulations make building on Montjuic – the mountain between the city and the sea – almost impossible, the Barcelona municipality is nonetheless keen to incorporate this green area into the city’s leisure network. The only way to do so is by re-using and revitalizing existing structures in order to give new initiatives a place. A recent example is the conversion of the Miramar building. It dates from the 1970s and is a well known point of reference in the city, visible from far away. When the restaurant it housed was recently converted into a Chinese one, it was up to the Italian-Portugese team of Federico Calabrese, Fabio Ferone and Joana Carvalho to safeguard the quality of at least the exterior spaces of the complex and of the transformation of the upper part.

L’Oiseau by the Bouroullecs

French designers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec will present a wooden bird called L’Oiseau, at this years Salone del Mobile in Milan. The bird will be a companion to the Eames House Bird which the Eames’s discovered on their travels and whose original designer remains unknown.
“It is a simple bird without any other function than trying to propose a caring presence, a pleasant company. We have always been fascinated by animal representations whether they are primitive or more contemporary — from ivory bears made by the Inuit community to the Finnish birds made in blown glass. It could seem outdated to be interested in such subjects however we truly think that it is a necessary fantasy to continue supplementing this symbolic bestiary.”

miami beach retailer

The project is a retail interior located at the 1111 Building on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach. The space is defined by two walls which contain the display cases. The walls are inflected to engage the customer from the exterior and to provide an integrated display at the storefront. The kink within the walls increases the display surface area while at the same time making every portion of the store visible to the sales-person. The sales area is defined by stainless steel panels which are perforated in order to reduce the weight of the heavy steel as well as to create a pixilated light pattern.
