House Conversion By David Mikhail Architects
Camden Square Conservation Area in London isn’t best known for its sleek contemporary architecture, but when David Mikhail Architects was asked to convert a Victorian terraced house, that is what they came up with.
The existing extension presented big challenges such as restricted garden access and poor daylight. To maximize the potential of the existing building, the closet wing was demolished and a brand new white box built. The extension has a full-width glazed wall with 5 metre high sliding doors, which extends the living space out to the garden, and maximizes daylight.
Instead of trying to recreate the Victorian style, the architects have opted for a modern interpretation of an extension. The floating staircase and architectural angles present an interesting play of lines in this otherwise rather stark interior.
