house by vibe design group

This truly mind-blowing residence was designed by Vibe Design Group and showcases quite a few impressive architecture details. Here are the photos and the information we received from the architects: “In the early design phase Vibe’s team were looking to create an open, more interactive street presence. The front façade was inspired by the study of 60s and early 70s stereo cabinets with the slatted timber reflecting the slotted speaker elements, in this case they accommodate the covered entry and private en suite window.

Arabic Bathroom Design

The Moroccan approach to bathing takes the idea of bathroom design to another level. Communal bathing in neighbourhood hammams turned the concept of the bathroom into something much more than a utility space, but into an important social arena where business, gossip and relationships were formed and sustained. Hammams remain an important part of life even today and traditional Arabic bathroom design incorporates rich references to both cultural and social influences from the Arabic and Islamic worlds.

Tadelakt
A traditional take on plastering – Tadelakt is a lime based mortar/plaster, coloured with natural powder dyes, finished with a coat of black Marseillessoap and stone polished, rendering it waterproof. In Morocco this finish is the norm for bathing and bathroom areas, the material is easily malleable and can be sculpted to create soft, tactile curves that incorporate solid baths or shower areas.

Tiles
Famous for intricate tiles, the Islamic geometric designs incorporated in Moroccan architecture offer much more than simple decoration, but more a representation of both religious and cultural references to the interconnectivity of life. The patterns are so complex that mathematicians throughout the ages have battled to decipher the codes. Mosaic or hand painted bathroom tiles are a perfect complement for Tadelakt bathrooms, infusing traditional Arabic design into the heart of the space.

Basins
Rather than porcelain units, palatial Moroccan bathrooms cater for a more refined taste, where a hand hammered copper bathroom sink and bath are polished and sunken into mosaic tiled stands.

Bathing
Water takes a unique place at the heart of Islamic culture, religion and design - as life-giving, sustaining and purifying it is recognised as the origin of all life on earth and as such is ascribed status within the culture. At famous Moorish settlements in Southern Spain, such as the Alhambra, the presence of water runs through the entire heart of the structure. In respect to the humble bathroom the same prevalence is given in creating a space in which to contemplate, purify and rejuvenate.

Mirrors
Morocco is renowned for its traditional crafts, including blacksmithing and metal work that create beautiful, intricate patterns in everything from window shutters, lamps, jewellery and frame work. Incorporating either beaten metal or patterned framed mirrors into the bathroom is a great way to infuse interior design with a signature look.

villa 1

Set in the woodlands of The Netherlands, the program of Villa 1 is oriented optimal towards the views on the terrain and the sun. Half of the program is pushed below ground to meet local zoning regulations. This creates a clear dichotomy in the spatial experience of the house – a glass box ground floor where all mass is concentrated in furniture elements and a ‘medieval’ basement, where the spaces are carved out of the mass.

Watch Vault DIY

This is a quick DIY we did for storing watches. We took advantage of using an ugly built-in medicine cabinet and re-purposed it for storing our (the wife also collects Panerais, how awesome is that!?) never ending collection of watches. We liked the cabinet idea because is built-in "inside the wall" so it's very low profile. We used 2.5 PVC pipes that we coated with paint and 3 coats of polyurethane for scratch resistance. To keep the watches in place, we got 3" black "stress" balls. Easy to put in and take out and they keep the watch in place securely. We did a black walnut trim around to fill the gap between the metal frame and the wood box for the vault. Using one of our posters on ikea's frame keeps everything top secret. This was a great solution and the watches are always ready!

dieter rams' home

Rams is not 'in it' for fame or money, nor does he wants the world to buy his latest designs but simply use the products that he and the design team at Braun during his tenure worked tirelessly to create.  Their work may have landed onto the pages of design books and magazines and even sit alongside images of iPhone calculators to suggest an influence on the designers of today, the intention was to change the way we view 'design' as a subject.

House Haller

The vision was a customised building, incorporating the impressive panorama at the foot of the Alps with a lifestyle demanding variable solutions. The owner’s specifications were a house combining living and working areas under one roof. The entire design of this compact house conforms to the location and it was built into the slight decline. As the hill side of the house is embedded, the east facing cellar area could be naturally illuminated and used as an office, for example. This office has direct access, via covered outdoor steps between the main entrance and the carport. Due to its ideal positioning, the building profits from the optimal use of the mountain sunshine.

LED-TV by studio aisslinger

The concept of the new Display LED television is an example of a new minimalist approach to the development of very thin flat-screen televisions. A metallic, angular structure reminiscent of a bent sheet of steel serves as its stand, additionally highlighting the slim construction for the user. The TV is turned on by inserting a finger in a circular opening within the stand where a sensor registers the movement and activates the screen. As with the Grid TV concept, this television also includes an external box providing numerous interfaces for the connection of periphery devices. It can be placed behind the screen while simultaneously guaranteeing an effortless connection of new devices at any time.

Abstraction LED Lamps by Perhacs Studio

“Abstraction” is a series of modular pendant lamps laser cut from recycled and recyclable materials and designed by Brandon Perhacs of Lichen and Perhacs Studio. In a clever and playful move, the designer made the leaves of the lamps interchangeable with one another. This allows for a wide variety of design possibilities as the different patterns, colors and materials within the series are mixed and matched. One of the finalists in our Bright Ideas Lighting Competition, the shades will be available by the end of the summer to be creatively separated and recombined.

Fujisan Humidifer

If you’ve been lucky enough to visit Japan and see the majestic mount Fuji, then you understand why designers like Yuchen Liu are inspired by it. It’s perpetually surrounded by mist and  that’s when it clicked for Yuchen Liu. The Fujisan Humidifer is an homage to mountain – purifies the air and puts moisture back into it. Beautiful, honest design.
