Loft Residence

This project is one of a series of gut renovations completed for several members of one family living in the same building in Chelsea. The primary element of the largest apartment is an ebonized oak and steel stair that connects communal space on the first floor of the triplex to a private second floor and a third, outdoor space at the roof. A new windowed bulkhead was added at the roof, bringing light down the stairwell and into the lower two floors. The kitchen, fabricated from stainless steel, and the stairwell enclosure, crafted from Cocobolo wood, appear as boxed insertions on the ground floor. This language is repeated in the Master Suite on the second floor, as storage units of the same Cocobolo wood protrude into the stairwell, defining rooms.

jack table

“JACK” was designed to economically address the various ergonomic, technological, and aesthetic requirements of everyday work surfaces. JACK’s name arose from its resemblance to the children’s game of jacks, and is a lighthearted reference to the flexibility and skill involved. Human-like in its structural form, flexible in its physical configuration, and precise in its ability to intrinsically connect users to their work environment, JACK reinvents the common work table. The design process took place in-house over a period two years. The Jack table’s legs are comprised of replications of the same part, economically eliminating variations within the forms required to cast each leg or leg variety. Variations in the specific connection between leg components allow for a wide range of support configurations. JACK’s legs seem to stand on tippy-toes, belying the lateral stability gained through a splayed arm configuration. This inverted configuration limits the interference (both visual and physical) making the table-top appear to float. Acting as both shroud and structure the shallow “V” shape of the cable tray allows for a double function by simultaneously concealing common technological clutter (wires) and increasing the spanning capacity of the surfacing material. JACK has personality. Finding a work surface that allows users to economically address their size, work habits, and aesthetic tendencies has to date been virtually unattainable. Fabrication technology—specifically CNC routers—affords users the opportunity to ‘mass customize” the product to suit their individual needs. JACK takes advantage of the fact that, for this type of equipment, machining variety is no less efficient than machining similarity so the machining of the surfacing material provides literally limitless customization opportunities. JACK provides solutions only limited by your imagination.

Copper House

The Copper House is located in the Hudson Valley on a wooded, six-acre site two hours north of New York City. Clad almost entirely in corrugated copper siding and a mixture of flat-seam and standing seam copper roofing, the skin will age and develop a patina that reflects time through material changes. The three-bedroom house features distinctive, sculpted south-facing skylights that allow light into various public and private spaces. The ground floor contains two bedrooms, living room, dining room, kitchen, and a home office. An eight-foot tall, 30-foot-long, open bookshelf system runs the length of the ground floor creating a sense of delineation between rooms, while retaining visual connections across the various spaces. The second floor contains a master bedroom, playroom, and attic space, with windows overlooking the sculpted copper skylights.

80 Dekalb

Located on the third floor of a residential tower, this amenity space combines a fitness center with a diverse entertainment program including screening room, gaming area, and demonstration kitchen. The boundary between these two programs is defined by a folded ceiling/wall covered in a metallic, patterned paper. This luminous patterned surface intersects the residential corridor to form the entrance. Once inside, the origami-like surface creates a canopy over the central lounge space. Programmed blocks bookend the ceiling to form smaller scales of gathering space - a custom reception desk, a library, and an intimate TV room. The walls peel back for entry to the gym and screening room. These rooms are characterized by deep grey tones and punctuated lighting. In contrast to these cool, dark exercise rooms, the opposing rooms by the terraces embrace the warmth of the adjacent outdoor space. A low wall of bamboo on the terraces surrounds exterior lounges and creates a backdrop for the interior lounge space. Here in the lounge, the canopy of the metal ceiling terminates by folding downward to form a sweeping bench and bar for this central gathering space for the residents of the building.
