s house

The Steen-Boas family comissioned VMX Architects to design their house on ‘Steigereiland’, one of the island of IJburg. The client asked for a spacious house with high quality outdoor space. To answer this demand VMX used a typological approach. In the design two classical typologies are combined: the patio villa and the manor house, or domus. The result can be regarded as a patio house on its side, with the patio as an open space on the first floor. This upturned patio in the front façade offers various possibilities to profit from the sun, both inside and out.

residence for Irish ambassador

The project for the residence of the Irish Ambassador in Wassenaar consists of two parts; an extension with a carport and the high-quality renovation of an existing building. The extension contains a professional kitchen and an apartment for the cook. As a consequence of the limited space in the zoning plan, the apartment is placed half underground under the kitchen, with an incision in the landscape on the side to provide daylight. The work surface of the kitchen works as a light box for the apartment, adding an extra meter of room height along the façade. The side façade of the kitchen and apartment is a patchwork of glued sheets of glass which mirror the sloping green, making the building blend into the surrounding and almost disappear.

modern in Colorado

from the website:

"We came to the US from Europe - Slovakia 5 years ago. It wasn’t our goal to built the house here but it happened and here is our short story. We became land owners sometimes in February 2009. It is unbelievable but we couldn’t find anything for sale that we liked and could afford at the same time. Maybe because we are from Europe and we have different needs and opinions on living or maybe because we are architects and we were thinking we can do better ourselves. We had been planning our home for a while and we found vacant land with south - north orientation for sale in Wheat Ridge, CO where our design would fit perfectly. Briefly, the house is around 1500sf plus detached double car garage. 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, single story, slab on grade, open floor plan, staggered double studs walls - spray foam insulated, full height windows, radiant heating, HR fan ventilation system, mini split AC (future), exterior rain screen system, large patio and breeze way between garrage and house. In general we were aiming for a low energy home."

soft bush

An open structure of steel branches carries an airy cover of soft, foam rhombi. Soft bush is a small bench for outside use where you sink in when you settle down. Its material seeks the boundary between inside and outside; material and immaterial. The open structure lets air and water run through. The tuft of foam on top varies from mint green to pink. They are in the field like tempting cakes.
